Poor sleep habits may be related to reflux
24-01-2012
QUESTION I have a 4.5month old baby who is a terrible sleeper! She wakes sometimes up to 6 times a night. She doesn’t have good day sleeps, she will sleep for about 20 min 3 times a day! She is at crèche so for her to be in a set routine during the morning (I fetch her at 1pm) is a bit impossible! I started her on rice cereal last week, which she has 3 times a day. When it comes to her bottle feeds she won’t finish a full bottle most of the time – when she wakes up at night I give her some milk and she settles quickly and will sleep until she wakes up again! I am not sure if I...

QUESTION: I need some advice please. My little girl is 3 months old, 6kg and happy alert and as normal as any other baba her age. She is not unwell, to my knowledge, and does not have reflux. BUT of late she flatly refuses to drink some of her bottles of formula. She pushes the teat out with her... tongue, bites the teat, turns her head from side to side to almost get away from it. I have tried feeding at longer stretches of time, feeding with little distraction, etc. Today she drank 150ml at 7:30am and only drank again at 1:30pm, then not much in the afternoon and not much again at 7:30pm...

Is your baby unsettled at night? Does she cry as if uncomfortable and remain fretful? This could be due to reflux. Ann Richardson helps us to understand what reflux is and how it can affect your baby’s sleep. If your baby has gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR), it may be a contributing factor to her lack of sleep. GOR is usually caused by an underdeveloped valve between your baby’s stomach and her oesophagus (the food pipe to her stomach). This valve will strengthen with age, but meanwhile the acidic content of her stomach (milk) is constantly being regurgitated into the oesophagus. Most babies...

07-09-2009Q: Hi there, Please help me. My baby is 5 months old and battles with Acid reflux. Each day is a complete nightmare. We have started him on solids in the hope that it helps the reflux but he simply just refuses to eat most of the time. I would appreciate any advice on how to make life a bit easier. We are doing the following: Have a small lift wedge for the cot. I have not been able to find one that has a better elevation, other than ordering from the USA He is on Losec Mups but I really don’t see a major difference I am giving him adult Gaviscon diluted in water to help him as that is the...
Read full articleQ: Hi Please can you help with our 5 month old baby. She has suffered from both colic and reflux since approximately 6 weeks. The colic did not last very long (a couple nights worth of crying) and we have put her on Zantac to help ease the reflux. I breastfed for approximately 5 weeks and she is now on InfaSoy formula and uses a dummy as a soother. Her sleeping habits have never been very consistent, and I believe that due to suffering from Colic and reflux, some bad sleeping habits could have been entrenched. She is currently waking at least 3-4 times per night, which is a substantial improvement from...
