Toddler refuses to eat

Hi Meg.
I am so worried about Thomas (almost 4). He refuses to eat and mealtimes are a constant battle. He seems to survive on fruit and juice and has to be bribed to eat anything else. Should I buy myself a copy of Toddler Sense? Is there a section in there on todders and their strange eating habits?

    Hi Nette

Toddlers are notoriously bad eaters. As moms we measure our success on rudimentary things like food and poos and sleep :) But please don’t worry though, he will eat you out of house and home one day!

While he is a bad eater, here are a few tips:
    1. Put him on a good supplement: Floradix Liquid Iron and Barley Green are a good place to start
    2. Get Toddler Sense - it does have great advice on fussy toddlers.
    3. Do not fight with him over food and do not follow him around with food.
    4. Do not let him eat sugary sweets and chips at all unless he has had a good meal that day.
    5. Give him what he likes - even it is only white bread and yogurt - the day will come when he eats colours other than white.
    6. Keep TV as a reward - not a distracter at mealtimes.

    Hope that helps??
    Meg

    Hi Meg.

    Yes this really helps.

We are limiting TV as a reward and cutting out most snacks to encourage him to eat his meals.
I have bought Toddler Sense and will look at the section on fussy eaters.

    Thanks for your advice.

I’m at whits end with my 22 month old. Since day 1 he’s been an awful eater. He has gone through phases of eating a ton one day and barely any the next and he’s really tall, but on the skinny side. He’s really smart though and has hit all his milestones ahead of other children his age (children of friends). He has had the vocab of a 2 year old since 18 months but I worry each day about his health because he never eats. Like, it is rare for him to eat anything any more. This week he’s only had one good meal and if it’s not pizza he’s not touching it! I am so worried at times. For breakfast he may have 3 bites of an egg and then milk and lunch 3 bites of a chicken nugget. He refuses almost all veggies and usually only eats peas, a few bites. Some days I just want to scream but I no longer try to force. But he only gets juice after if he actually eats and we watch TV only if he eats his breakfast. I give uP!!!
